Targetting the poor (Crewe and Nantwich)
CREWE police say a week-long campaign to tackle law-breaking and social issues in the West End has been a big success. Vehicles without tax and insurance, televisions without licences, people who failed to pay fines and families causing problems for neighbours were all targeted. Pubs, clubs, off licences and takeaway outlets were checked for possible breaches of licensing laws or health and safety regulations.
Part of the Cheshire Police Strikeout campaign, the operation involved staff from the DVLA, TV Licensing, South Cheshire Magistrates Court, Wulvern Housing, the borough and county councils and British Gas. PC Mike Rushton, who organised the operation, said: "It was the type of enforcement work which we and the other agencies carry out all the time, but we concentrated it on one area and into one week. "We believe it was very successful. "It caught a number of individuals who were breaking the law and causing problems for other people in the area. Just as important, the campaign was highly visible.
"We are sure it sent a clear message to other people who are breaking the law in similar ways or who have an anti social lifestyle. "These are the type of issues which affect people's everyday lives. "At local Community Action Meetings and from conversations which people have with police officers and Police Community Support Officers in the street we know they want to see this type of action. "Our best form of support for this type of work is information from the public. "You can contact us on the Cheshire Police Information line 0845 458 0000 or the Crewe Neighbourhood Policing line 0845 458 6370 or leave information anonymously on Crime Stoppers 0800 555 111. " We will be carrying out more operations of this type."
