Warning over TV sports addicts (coventry)

Post by Admin on Mon Jun 16, 2008 10:26 pm

SPORTS fans in Coventry could end up costing their employers huge fines by watching this summer's bumper package of sports. TV Licensing has warned bosses they risk a £1,000 penalty if staff are watching live sport online and the business is unlicensed. The warning has come with Euro 2008 in full swing and Wimbledon and the Olympics looming. It has been prompted by concerns that some, without TVs in their offices, may be unwittingly breaking the law by allowing staff to watch TV online. Online viewing can be found by officers in detector vans or by using the new hand-held devices.

During last year's Wimbledon Championships and the World Cup finals in 2006, TV Licensing netted 200 individuals and businesses in Coventry. Mark Whitehouse, TV Licensing spokesman for the West Midlands, said: "Watching TV on a computer at work is no different from on a TV set at home - if you're watching programmes as they're broadcast, you need a valid licence."
