Warning over TV sports addicts (Huddersfield)

Post by Admin on Wed Jun 18, 2008 3:09 pm

FIRMS face a £1,000 penalty if they let football-mad staff watch live sport on the internet at work without a TV licence. Officials from TV Licensing issued the warning after last year, when almost 250 individuals and business across Huddersfield were caught watching the World Cup and Wimbledon without a licence.

With the Euro 2008 football championships well under way and Wimbledon about to serve up two weeks of tennis, enforcement officers will be out in force. TV Licensing said some employers may be unwittingly breaking the law by allowing staff to watch television online.

Charlotte Hancock, spokeswoman for TV Licensing in the north, said: “Whereas in the past employees may have taken a day off to catch the action, events including Euro 2008, Wimbledon and the Olympics will be broadcast online this summer, meaning people can watch from the comfort of their desks even if there isn’t a TV set at work.

“While not all businesses have a TV set, most will have computers with broadband connections, capable of receiving programmes as they are broadcast.
So more businesses will now require a TV licence if staff are watching programmes in this way.”
