The cost of a colour TV licence will rise by £4 to £139.50 on 1 April, but thousands of people can avoid paying more by renewing their licence promptly, according to the company that collects the fee on behalf of the Government.

TV Licensing said today that its database of more than 29m UK addresses shows that almost 1.5m people have licences due to expire before the end of the month. By renewing promptly, before the licence fee increase next month, TV Licensing has calculated that together they can save a total of nearly £6m.

On 1 April, the cost of a colour TV licence will rise by £4 to £139.50 and the cost of a black and white licence will rise from £45.50 to £47. The licence fee is set by Government.

Joanna Pearce at TV Licensing said: 'If you're having a spring clean of your finances, it makes sense to check whether you could save some cash by renewing your TV licence before the end of this month.
